NOLAlicious #49, December 14 to 20, 2010 Friends, What do the holidays mean to you? We've been thinking about this here at NOLAlicious, and we know it's a lot about family and friends getting together and celebrating the year that was. We've also started to think about the year ahead. What did we want to do this year that we didn't? Who did we want to see more of, but timing never quite worked out? For us, all too often we get caught up in the splendor of Orleans Parish, but we know there is much more to New Orleans (and Louisiana for that matter) farther afield. Some of our best days this year have been with friends at festivals, taking plantation tours or exploring small towns outside of New Orleans proper. In our quest to create a "good life" it can be hard to find time for everything... until it occurred to us that we have to make time. With that in mind, what will you make time for next year? What do you want to do more of, or do differently, or who are the people you want to see more of? Write those down and work on making 2011 the best year yet. We know we will. Happy Holidays, Sloane and the NOLAlicious Team P.S. Give the gift of NOLAlicious this holiday season with the NOLAlicious 2011 calendar! DO Bring on the caroling! Since 1946, The Patio Planters of the Vieux Carré have sponsored Caroling in Jackson Square, our favorite New Orleans holiday tradition. Hundreds of people gather in Jackson Square to sing traditional holiday songs and enjoy one other’s company. It’s a fun way to end your weekend and, hey, if you’re not the best singer, it won’t matter because there will be so many people singing along no one will be able to hear just you! Pack some eggnog and hot chocolate and bundle up the kids for this great family fun. Sunday December 19th. 6:30PM – 8:00PM. Free to the public. EAT If you are in the mood for some delicious Italian food, head over to Mid City and check out Nona Mia. Throw your carb counting out the window and enjoy the romantic atmosphere and top notch food. It's all about love and family at this family-run establishment. Share an appetizer and a glass of wine with some friends, or go for a special date night. Any night you don't have to cook at home is special, right? Open Sunday-Thursday 11:00AM – 10:00PM, weekends until 11:00PM. 3125 Esplanade Avenue. Facebook / Twitter. GO Need some funky gift ideas for your friends this year? Check out Witchy Living in the Marigny Triangle. This new shop tags itself as a store with notions and potions for everyday living. The prices are reasonable and the selection is completely unique for all your little pagans, witches and Harry Potter followers. We know we’d love to get a little something from them in our stockings. Open daily 12:00PM - 6:00PM. Closed Wednesdays. 2109 S Decatur Street. Facebook / Twitter EAT ‘Tis the season to stuff your face with sweets, and there’s no better place to indulge than Sucre, a Magazine Street shop that offers sugary treats from gelato to french macaroons to hand-crafted chocolates. Their store is a true holiday wonderland, with giant gingerbread men built from real cookies in the front window, and special seasonal delights everywhere! Their canned drinking chocolate with red and white marshmallows, as well as their Sugar and Spice chocolate collection (featuring gingerbread, candy cane and eggnog truffles) make amazing gifts for friends and family with a sweet tooth. 3025 Magazine Street. LAGNIAPPE Get into the holiday spirit with a screening of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" at The Alamo Underground. As part of their Wednesday night movie series, this movie is free - or donation optional if you like. This space had been home over the past 30 years to jazz brunches, galleries, movie screenings and theater productions until 2008. We are thrilled it reopened this past Labor Day and if you haven't been to this New Orleans gem which actually resembles The Alamo, this is a perfect opportunity. 1547 Crete Street.
