July 20 to 26, 2010 Dear Friends, It seemed like the cap would never happen. 87 days into a Deepwater Horizon catastrophe, it seems BP has finally stopped oil from spewing into the Gulf. But we know the end is nowhere close. So we encourage everyone to push forward and find ways to help this region that we all hold so close to our hearts. A few suggestions? Sign the petition launched at Restore The Gulf, which states: "I demand that a plan to restore America's Gulf be fully funded and implemented for me and future generations." Join the National Day of Action slated for August 25th created by Citizen Gulf and promoted by Gulf Coast Benefit. And continue to talk about it, blog about it and push traditional media to keep reporting on the situation from the Gulf Coast so that everyone knows that the hard work in environmental cleanup, economic impact and mental health implications are far from over. In lighter news, NOLAlicious is on the hunt for a few more team members to join us in curating and sharing the "best of New Orleans" from week to week. If you're a writer (or fashion yourself to be) and would like to join our growing family, please send us an example of your favorite activity around town in your best NOLAlicious-styling. Send to editor@nolalicious.com: we're looking forward to seeing what you've got! With shining hearts, Carl, Sloane, Taylor, Martin, Kat PS: Do you like the NOLAlicious desktop photo above? NOLAlicious Picks SEE Support Satchmo's legacy at the Louis Armstrong Jazz Camp benefit concert held Wednesday at Republic. Jazz Camp, a selective, three-week long summer program, chooses a promising group of young people to train in brass, percussion, vocal music and more each year. These students often go on to careers as musicians and performing artists. This week's benefit will feature performances by jazz camp faculty; information for the event tantalizingly notes that the performance is for “adults only." Remember, before rock and roll was the “devil's music,” there was jazz. Wednesday, July 21, 7 PM. $50. SEE Local instrumental rock sensations Smiley With A Knife kick off a new tour Friday with a performance at the Dragon's Den. The band headlines a late-night show with the Other Planets and Nigredo, in the first show of a tour promoting their new album, Long Now, due out next month. The band is part of a small group of New Orleans rockers that cultivate an instrumental, post-rock sound, to the delight of record-store snobs and casual listeners alike. Friday, 10:30 PM. GO Capture an intimate moment at Lost Love Lounge before it gets too hip: this new(ish) Marigny bar is sure to be the next big thing among the aspiring-gutterpunk-and-wannabe-Hemingway set. The dim rouge décor, an informal lending library, and a jukebox full of soul favorites all earn high marks for sophistication and coolness, while the limited Vietnamese menu served out of the back of the building is an inspired change from typical bar fare. Open every day. SEE The NOLA Fringe Fest is going to the Big Apple – with your help! The New Orleans’s Fringe Festival’s hit “Love in the Time of Swine Flu” has been accepted as part of the 14th Annual Finge NYC Fest. To help fund the trip to New York City, Stupid Time Machine will host an Extremely Classy Night of Laughter at the Theatre at Canal Place. The evening will include live music, stand-up comedy, a silent auction including local artist Jon Guillaume’s “It’s a Little Crude” print, and selected sketches from “Love in the Time of Swine Flu.” Located in the Shops at Canal Place. Saturday, July 24, 7:30 PM. LAGNIAPPE Alright all you legal-eagles out there, here’s a great benefit concert to go to this week, the 2nd Annual Legal-Palooza at the House of Blues! This exciting concert will feature the musical talent of The N'awlins Johnny’s, Mia Borders, and Cou-Zan Band. Partnered with United Way, this event is looking to grow from last year's success. Proceeds go to Legal Aid Bureau. Located in the Parish Room in the HOB. 229 Decatur Street. Thursday, July 22. Doors open at 6 PM. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. TRAVEL If you're looking to get out of the city and take a tour of a cool establishment we recommend going to the Abita Springs Brewery in Abita Springs, LA. Besides being able to see how your favorite beer is produced it's only an hour away and it makes for a great drive with visiting friends or family. Take along a designated driver and then have fun and drink up! Job Opportunities in New Orleans
