June 29 to July 5, 2010 Dear Friends, There's a lot on our horizon this week. We're watching tentatively as Hurricane Alex gains strength in the Gulf of Mexico, perhaps slowing the efforts of BP as they set up a third containment rig in efforts to slow the ever-mounting flood of oil wreaking havoc in the Gulf. Unfortunately, this is just the beginning of what could be a long hurricane season. The 4th of July is coming up this weekend, and it reminds us that we've been sharing our love of New Orleans with you for 25 weeks now. We're continually amazed and encouraged by your support as we've grown and changed throughout the year, and we hope that you celebrate this weekend as happily as we will. Here's to hoping that the rain and wind doesn't get in the way of enjoying the weekend watching fireworks, listening to soulful music, and kicking back with friends. Graciously yours, Carl, Sloane and TaylorP.S. The New Orleans Photo Alliance is seeking submissions for the GULF project; so submit your best photos highlighting the beauty, industry and life that represents the Gulf of Mexico.
NOLAlicious Picks GO Head on down to the Superdome for the annual Essence Music Fest this weekend and stay out of the heat! Known as "the party with a purpose" for its hip-hop, rhythm and blues and soul performances at the Louisiana Superdome by night, and inspirational "empowerment seminars" by day. Featuring Janet Jackson, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Raphael Saadiq and local favorite DJ Soul Sister, this festival will be amazing from start to finish. Located in the Superdome. July 2-4, all day. Tickets available at the gate and online from $53 and up. EAT We’ve all heard of BYOB, but how about BYOF (bring your own food)? Sometimes, at the end of a long workday all we want is an ice-cold beer. Hop on over to Bayou Beer Garden and enjoy NOLA’s largest selection of beers from all over the world. Sit down and relax with friend inside or enjoy the patio with iPod hookups to enjoy your favorite tunes. Situated in a gorgeous section of Mid-City, this fun place allows you to bring your own food and experience new and delicious beers that you can’t get anywhere else. 326 N. Jefferson Davis Parkway. Open daily. Look out for Daily Beer Bucket Specials. DO Think the riverfront is only for tourists? Think again. At the annual “Go 4th on the River” celebration, New Orleans families (and, of course, our visiting friends) come out to see the annual fireworks display, where two “dueling” barges shoot off a spectacular fireworks display over the mighty Mississippi. Live music acts as a backdrop for the acclaimed display, with festivities beginning well before the 9PM fireworks show. For a VIP experience, get a room at the Westin Canal Place, whose windows overlook the riverfront. Sunday. Free. SEE Satire gets resurrected at Zombie Town, a Southern Rep production opening Thursday at Le Chat Noir. Written by Tim Bauer, the comic “documentary play” follows a theater troupe as they interview the survivors of a Texas zombie attack. The spoof is a great pick for theater lovers, zombie aficionados, or those who just love brainnnns. Drop into Bar Noir, the cozy little bar adjoined to Le Chat Noir, before the show for drinks. Thursday to Saturday 8PM, Sunday 6PM, through July 18. $20. LAGNIAPPE We all like to get a new outfit, but nobody like to spend a fortune every season. Add a new stop to your thrift-store rounds with Rebirth Clothing Exchange. This locally owned establishment specializes in quality-label clothes for guys and gals – a stop in last week turned up items from Ralph Lauren and Miu Miu as well as the usual slew of high-end mall brands. Lots of friendly, personal attention from the staff – we saw an employee discuss four different possible outfits with another customer – makes the difference between this store and some of the city's more-trafficked resale outlets. Since it’s a thrift store, you know they will have new inventory in all the time. Located at 140 N. Carrollton Avenue. Open everyday. Job Opportunities in New Orleans Travel Get outta town and relax at Wayne’s World! Spend a relaxing day canoeing and tubing on the beautiful Bogue Chitto River in Washington Parish, 3.5 miles south of Enon, LA, and only an hour's drive from NOLA. Pack your lunch and and enjoy the outdoors! |
